Why is the Karnataka government not entrusting work to the Central Public Works Department? This question comes from the Director General of CPWD who has work orders worth over Rs 26,000 crores across the country.
Addressing media persons in Bangalore, Director A Chakrabarti said the CPWD was executing a number of projects all over the country.
“But in Karnataka no work falling within the domain of the State government has been entrusted to the CPWD”, he pointed out.
However, he said, in Bangalore CPWD is carrying out Rs 100 crore worth work of the Central government sponsored projects.
Upgradation
One of the major works being carried out by the CPWD all over country is the upgradation of some of the major hospitals to the rank of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, under a Central government scheme.
“But unfortunately in Karnataka this work has not been entrusted to us”, Mr Chakrabarti remarked.
According to Mr Chakrabarti these days, the CPWD is making a major foray into four areas-health, education, tourism and sports.
Stating that today the health sector has undergone major changes, Mr Chakrabarti added that the health concept has acquired a new definition.
On the tourism sector, Mr Chakrabarti said the CPWD has the expertise in the field and it has done the illumination of Hampi, Halebidu, etc in Karnataka.
“We are rewriting the history of tourism sector in many parts of the country and in Karnataka we are ready to be associated with the government in developing the tourist spots”, he remarked.
