Violence by domestic workers
Sir, There are instances of the domestic servants turning violent when they are not treated well. Lack of considerate approach towards domestic workers has become one of the major reasons in recent times for them to commit heinous crimes on their “employers”. Recently, an 18-year-old domestic worker killed three members of a family.
Going by the statements of the accused, it is not difficult to comprehend that their action has not brought any solace to them from the alleged trauma of ill-treatment and humiliation they suffered at the hands of their employers. Instead, their hasty action has only brought misery to them. This is not the only way to escape from the alleged ill-treatment. The crime perpetrated by them finds no justification.

Credibility crises
Sir, This refers to A question of identity (DH, May 21) by Amulya Ganguli. The Congress has lost its creditworthiness due to its hunger for power and encouragement to corrupt politicians and bureaucrats. This evil mentality has spread to other parties also. Dividing the country on the basis of caste and religion and ignoring the need for quality basic education are the blunders Congress has committed. This has given way for private education with donation, which is a sort of bribe.

Vanishing playgrounds
Sir, This refers to Disappearing playgrounds (DH, May 20). Everyday, land that is set aside for community use is being usurped. In particular, playgrounds that are important for physical development are shrinking. Are the people so selfish that they are depriving their children of such an essential thing? It is surprising that people of Austin town, in particular the sportspersons (as that area has produced a lot of athletes and football players for our country), are quiet on the issue.

Not up to expectations
Sir, The Congress-led UPA government at the Centre has completed three years. But, the government has not lived up to the expectations of the aam aadmi. Union Minister Manishankar Aiyar is not happy with the performance of his own government. Alarming rise in the price of all commodities has angered the poor man. He is not interested in growth figures. Congressmen are not worried about their unpopularity. They are in fact busy in praising the glory of the Gandhi-Nehru family.

Promises and action
Sir, In the times of coalitions and various political and social alignments, has anybody analysed and detected any tangible benefits to the needy and the downtrodden? We have politicians in Uttar Pradesh, who have ruled for 14 years. In Tamil Nadu the DMK, champions of the poor and anti-Brahmanism, is at the helm. What is their contribution towards the upliftment of the backward people? There is hardly any translation of their promises into reality. The unfortunate people still bear the brunt of oppression.

Why is Bangalore hot?
Sir, In 1964, when I came to Bangalore, the highest temperature in summer was about 29 degree Celsius. Now, the temperature rises up to 36.5 degree Celsius. Bangalore has warmed up by about 7 degree Celsius. Surprisingly, such drastic climate change has not taken place in most of the US cities. I would like to know why?
