Bangladesh skipper Habibul Bashar said it was a little tough to adjust to the demands of Test cricket as they were playing a Test after 14 months.
"We were playing a Test match after a long time. It was a little difficult to adjust and contain them in the first innings. But I feel good to have made a meaningful contribution. We didn't play very badly and we didn't let them dominate totally. We batted well in the second innings, and the bowlers took some good wickets. The only way to bring back some life into the match was an early declaration. If I was in place of Rahul, I may have declared too," Bashar said here on Tuesday.
"It is not easy to chase 250 in the fourth innings of a Test match. We have a little psychological advantage going into the second Test. We did well after being eight down for 149 to reach 238. It was a great effort," he added.
Meanwhile, outgoing Bangladesh coach Dav Whatmore said he was very satisfied with his team's performance. "I am very satisfied. The most exciting part of the whole game was the way we fought back after being down 149 for eight.
“It was great to see the two bowlers (Mashrafe Mortaza and Shahadat Hossain) bring life back into the match. I thought India would declare earlier and if there was play in the morning session, it would have been interesting," he said.
However, the Australian admitted that the rains had helped them a bit. "It would have been a lot harder for us to draw the match had not many sessions been lost to rain. It is not easy to play on with a deficit of 149."
Whatmore heaped praise on Mortaza. "He is a talented boy just beginning to understand what he is capable of. I am sure he will get better if he keeps the injuries away," he said.
On the absence of Anil Kumble in the match he said, "He has 547 wickets in Tests. He would have posed a challenge. The boys were looking forward to playing him."
