International models of education on Indian soil. A place where mentoring a child and inculcating values is discharged informally yet effectively. Extracurricular activities of the likes of music, dance and fine arts are not sidelined as subsidiaries of no significance, rather treated on par with science and history.
``TREAMIS World School incorporates an integrated syllabus. The school has developed a design of teaching wherein children are made to arrive at a common platform after which a preferred syllabus can be opted for,” explains Mrs Dakshayini Kanna, Director of Business and Operations at TREAMIS. The curriculum options include Indian (CBSE), Cambridge-UK (IGCSE), IB and US (College Board). She further goes on to say, ``Indian teaching methodologies tend to focus only on academics.
At TREAMIS, music, art and sports are consolidated into the curriculum so that it contributes to a child’s holistic development.” When the question of instilling Indian values in students comes up, she opines, “How can Indian values be differentiated from universal values.”
Best of both worlds
Managed by a group of professionals from the US and India, the school has been set up with the intention of bringing the best of both worlds to students in Bangalore, particularly Electronics City, where the school is located.
Says Venkatesh Koravadi, MD, TREAMIS, “Teaching methods in India can be too rigid disallowing kids to enjoy their time in school. Propagation of knowledge should be casual and friendly.”
Given the distance of the school from the heart of Bangalore city, a boarding facility is in place which currently accommodates around 40 students. However the school has a principle of admitting only children above 10 years of age at their boarding.
Even the design of the school is such that the buildings do not appear too imposing or intimidating to students, particularly kindergarten kids. Rooms with wooden and tiled floors, classrooms overlooking gardens, and an adjacent courtyard for play, ensure that tiny tots get enough room space to develop their personalities. The one-way mirrors in KG classes also enable guardians to view first-hand, their ward in action.
As a policy, lessons are not thrust upon KG goers. Instead, each child undergoes assessment of their fine and motor skills and accordingly, decisions are arrived upon as to whether they are ready for particular tasks such as writing or reading.
Informal delivery
As the school lays strong emphasis on hands-on learning, a variety of skills are taught throughout the year, including weaving, sewing, and carpentry, all of which are held in an open-air room which provides for a conducive environment for students to draw inspiration and express their creativity.
Sports and gym are held indoors for the convenience of the students. Swimming is not viewed as a period that should be held separately at the end or beginning of the day. On the contrary, students get to take their dip between regular subject periods, be it math or geography. Also, the positioning of the music class near the cafeteria provides for symbiotic entertainment!
Students are given the opportunity to attend national and international exchange programmes in high school. This way, their ambit of exposure is broadened at a young age itself. The various clubs at the school – astronomy, chess, drama, film, photography, karate, yoga, basketball, cricket – also leave no chance for children not being able to explore their favourite subjects to the core.
With pedagogy that encompasses unconventional learning methods and team-based execution of projects, it is evident that TREAMIS holds no compromise on the values it upholds – self explanatory by the acronym the name represents – Teamwork, Respect, Responsibility, Ethics, Etiquette and Service.
