Rising bubbles, wave motion, floating ball, chaos and order, lazy coins, air cannon are some of the exhibits at the newly-added Fun Science Gallery of the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum (VITM). Fun Science Gallery, fully developed by VITM and spread over an area of 700 sq mtrs, consists of 50 interactive exhibits and a state-of-the-art digital 3-D theatre.
Developed at a cost of Rs 90 lakh, the interactive exhibits have been conceptualised to provide the visitors maximum fun and excitement in learning science.
G Padmanaban, renowned biotechnology expert, Indian Institute of Science, Chairman, Governing Body, National Council of Science Museums, who inaugurated the Fun Science gallery said: “Earlier India was known for Maharajas and snakes, now our country is recognised as the super knowledge capital of the world. This recognition is attributed to the tremendous improvement in the science and technology. Science and technology is needed to improve the quality of life and to understand it.”
Padmanaban said, “Science education should not be imparted just by classroom teaching but also by informal education which would motivate students to learn science. Students should make use of exhibitions to learn science, understand the principles, question the fundamental concepts.”
Talking about the Fun Science Gallery, Ingit Mukherjee, Director General, National Council of Science Museums, said, “The gallery has an ambience where science can be discovered. By questioning and understanding science a paradigm shift is created. Science should be fun to learn as science is adventure and this is what the gallery offers to visitors.”
“The Electrotechnic hall will be soon renovated and revived with better and new exhibits as part of the next project in VITM,” added Ingit Mukherjee.
A digital 3D theatre, which is part of the Fun Science Gallery, is equipped with two state-of-the-art digital video projectors, and gives unparalleled colour fidelity, brightness to enable vivid projection onto a 3.6 mtr wide screen. VITM houses seven exhibition galleries including the Engine Hall, Electrotechnic, Science for Children, Space, Biotechnological Revolution, BEL Hall of Electronics and Fun Science Gallery. Two special exhibits consisting of working models of dinosaur and a replica of Wright Brothers’ Flyer-I are the main attractions at VITM.
