To provide extensive coverage of local news, Deccan Herald on Thursday launched the City Herald, a weekly supplement, here.
This venture of Deccan Herald is a window to the the cultural, economical and social growth of Mangalore - its challenges and opportunities.
Come Saturday and City Herald will expose you to a variety of features and articles on art, lifestyle, culture, hangouts, entries, infrastructure and the shopping scene in the City.
Launching the City Herald, Manipal University former vice-chancellor Prof B M Hegde said “media plays a vital role in this globalised economy. Intellectual terrorism will destroy the fabric of the society, which can be fought by an independent media.”
Recalling the growth of Deccan Herald over the past 60 years, Prof Hegde said that the newspaper has never succumbed to external pressures especially at a time when big corporate media houses were trying to swallow the smaller one.
Referring to the growth of the City, he opined that the supplement was the need of the hour.
“It would be better if the supplement could dedicate atleast half page to carry ‘happy news,” Prof Hegde suggested and cited the example of the website happynews.com
Mangaloreans believe in authentic news and Deccan Herald speaks volumes of authenticity, he said and added that Deccan Herald Founder K N Guruswamy looks like a Mangalorean. He said the turban and coat worn by Mr Guruswamy was exactly like the dress used by Mangaloreans.
Deccan Herald and Prajavani Chairman and Editor K N Tilak Kumar, reacting to Prof B M Hegde’s suggestion, said that he would consider dedicating space to the happy news after having glimpse of www.happynews.com.
The paper has always believed in connecting people across sections and this supplement will continue the endeavour, he said and also highlighted the importance the paper has given to local news.
Associate Editor A V S Namboodiri said the daily stands for grace and reliability.
Both have been touched by technology in the recent times and have witnessed changes. “We are keeping pace with technological changes, but firmly sticking to our values. We believe facts are sacred and present news as it happens. We do not believe in gimmicks and sensationalisation to attract people. Our commitment to our readers has made us a household name for decades,” he added.
Welcoming the gathering, Vice President (Marketing) D B Dutta said that Deccan Herald provides complete, comprehensive and latest news. It follows easy to read format.
The Printers (Mysore) Private Limited provides double coverage by reaching all the sections of the people with both English and Kannada newspapers, he added.
