Kangod Gram Panchayat in Siddapur taluk is reeling under severe water scarcity. Most wells in the gram panchayat’s villages - Mankod, Igod and Kangod are depleted. Women struggle for hours to draw a few pots of water from the depleted wells.
In Mankod village, which falls under Kangod Gram Panchayat, 27 households depend for water on one government well.
All private wells have gone dry.
Kangod Gram Panchayat Member Maruti Naik Kangod alleges that the Rs 4.5 lakh water project proposed for Mankod was diverted to another village on the recommendation of a people’s representative.
The two wells in Igod village have dried up. People queue up to draw water from the three government wells and one borewell in Ganeshnagar of Kangod village.
Women near wells complain that they are not able to go to coolie work, which is their main source of livelihood, as most of their time is spent on drawing water.
A proposal to supply water to Kangod from Jakri Gundi stream has not materialised.
