New lease of life for Mauritian boy
Manipal, DHNS:

The ENT surgeons of Kasturba Hospital here in a rare surgery, restored the hearing of a Mauritian boy.  A release said, 18-year-old Ravindra Kumar Podarut was suffering from Cholesteatoma, a disease which could have caused bone destruction and lead to brain related complications and even death, if not treated in time. He had hearing problems with the left ear since childhood , progressively increasing and had reached to the stage of nil hearing in the left ear.
At Kasturba Hospital, the specialist surgeons headed by Dr P Hazarika, performed a surgery to remove the Cholesteatoma from the ear completely leaving behind the tiny bone in the ear responsible for hearing. Another tiny bone which was completely destroyed was reconstructed with the patients own tragal cartilage (ear bone). Mr Podarut regained his hearing after 7 days of the surgery and it is improving everyday. Dr Hazarika in the release assured that he will have complete hearing restoration after a month.
