Words, words are all they will have, on this special day. Come May 26th, about 600 kids would be `spell’-bound at a state level spelling competition titled Spell Bee, to be hosted by the city.
This one-day event would test the English capabilities of participating kids and short-list about 30 per cent of them to take part in the national level spelling competition schcduled in Goa, by the end of June. Three toppers would be honoured with prizes too.
Dinesh Kumar Boswan of `Brain Button’, the company managing `Spell Bee’ competitions in the state, explained that school level and district level competitions were held in five districts.
The districts to be covered are Bangalore, Kolar, Hubli, Belgaum and Raichur. About 30 per cent of the participants were found eligible for next levels and all of them were expected to participate in the event on 26th.
The competitions are organised by Cochin-based MARRS Events in coordination with the Cambridge University Press.
The competitions test the English aptitute of kids from 1st standard to 10th standard, categorising them into six groups. Cambridge Advanced Learners’ Dictionary is the reference used.
Mr Dinesh said that three rounds - Dictation round, Jumbled Word round and Oral round, were conducted at lower levels and state level competition would have two more rounds, Idioms round and Pick & Spell round. According to him, `Spell Bee’ enhances linguistic enthusiasm and reading habit among the kids.
``The competitions would help them all to understand global standards of English language while being a special advantage for rural students,’’ he said.
`Spell Bee’ would be held at Shivaratreshwara Centre, JSS Group of Auditoriums, 1st main, 8th block, Jayanagar, Bangalore. The event will begin at 9.15 am on May 26.
