In times when we hear of nothing but fatal accident cases and victims not being able to reach the hospital on time, the story of Deepa Baliga stands out.
Twenty seven-year-old Deepa was lying unconscious on St Marks Road on a busy Saturday last month (April 21), a victim of a hit-and-run accident. She was brought to Mallya Hospital by a good samaritan who happened to see her lying injured on the road.
A CT scan revealed a severe head injury and skull fracture. Within a few hours, her condition worsened and another CT scan revealed intercranial hematoma. The hospital management took a drastic decision and gave consent to proceed with a major neuro surgical procedure. Dr Anantha Kishan performed the life saving surgery.
Says Commodore Indru Wadhwani, president, Mallya Hospital, “She would have died had we not performed the surgery. So we let the doctors go ahead with the surgery. It was more important to save her life than to sit around and wait for formalities to be completed.”
The hospital had however informed the police and a case has been filed. “One must thank the man who brought her here. We were told that people were passing by without offering help.
Timely action saved her life. Usually, people are afraid to help accident victims because of the way they are treated by the police. The paperwork is immense and they are interrogated with absurd questions” he adds.
Deepa’s family traced her almost two days later with the help of the police.
Deepa has now made a miraculous recovery at the hospital. In just a month, she can now walk a few steps as well as talk a bit.
Her mother, who has been by her bedside for the last month, can only thank everyone from the doctors to the man who brought her daughter to the hospital on time and God, for saving Deepa’s life.
“Two days ago, her father told her to fight and use her inner strength to get well soon. And she has done just that. She will need another two months at least before she recovers completely,” she said.
Though physically weak, Deepa seems determined to get back on her feet. Says Deepa, “I cannot remember the accident at all.”
She has, however, not had any other loss of memory or injuries and with the doctors, her family and well wishers behind her, Deepa is on the road to recovery. She was discharged from the hospital last week.
