One good thing about this film is that it acquaints you with “stepping,” a traditional dance done in African-American fraternities. That said, step as far as you can from it! A predictable narrative that can only be the handiwork of a ten year old, is best ignored. And the dance chunks will never inspire you as much as Dirty Dancing or even Dance with me.
DJ (Short) leaves his stinging past behind and starts off on a clean slate at Truth University which is rocked by two major, rival stepping fraternities. Initially to win a girl's heart, then to discover himself, DJ gets drawn to the rhythm and style of the dance form. He pledges himself to the Theta Nu Theta fraternity which will contend against Mu Gamma Xi the seven-year champs in the annual stepping contest. What happens next is anyone's guess. But first, some false excitement generated with DJ's past catching up with him and our star stepper being expelled from the University. Director White's prime reason to “be involved” in this film was that his father was part of a stepping fraternity in college. Unfortunately, we have none to watch it!
