Cauvery issue: State all set to defeat TN appeals
DH News Service, Bangalore:

The main thrust by the State government would be to defeat all the civil appeals filed in the Supreme Court by Tamil Nadu and other states in the Cauvery Waters dispute.
This decision was taken at a meeting held at the Windsor Manor in which senior counsel Mr Fali S Nariman and other officials participated.
The meeting was convened to discuss about the line of arguments to be advanced before the Supreme Court where the State has filed a special leave petition against the verdict of the tribunal. It was also discussed as to how the SLP has to be pursued in the Supreme Court.
The legal experts felt that the civil appeals by Tamil Nadu and the other states must be opposed as they were seeking more water than what the tribunal had granted.
Stating that Karnataka had to get a better share of water, it was stated that this would be the main line of argument to be advanced before the Supreme Court. Apart from this the meeting also discussed as to how arguments ought to be substantiated in the Supreme Court.
However, the meeting did not discuss anything with regard to the oral observations the Supreme Court had made while admitting the SLP.
The Supreme Court had suggested it would be better to settle this matter out of court with the help of technical experts.
Sources stated that first and foremost the observations were oral in nature. Moreover, even Tamil Nadu had stated that there was no point in talking about this issue since talks had failed since 1978.
The meeting, which was attended by 20 persons having technical expertise in the subject also discussed about the Krishna waters case.
Discussions about the examination and cross examination of witnesses in the case were also held. The discussions will continue on Monday.
