At least 17 people of a marriage party were killed and 23 injured, two of them critically, when the van, in which they were travelling, collided with a bus near Muloor in Kaup police station limits on Monday.
Udupi Superintendent of Police Subramanyeshwara Rao said the marriage party was proceeding to Majoor Jumma Masjid from Muloor Guggannathota in Udupi district.
Of the injured, 14 have been admitted to a private hospital in Udupi. The maxi cab was completely damaged and bodies and belongings of the victims were found scattered all over the place.
The deceased have been identified as Abinabi (65), Khairunisa (35), Maimuna (45), Khathija (50), Munaj (35), Jubeida (35), Raziya (45), Rashida (31), Asma (19), Nazia (12), Shifan (7), Yusif (10), Misba (9), Ashraf (8), Suhail (12), Musira (6) and the cab driver, Mohammed Ali (20).
Ten of them died on the spot and others succumbed to injuries later. However, a three-month old baby Abdul Arafath had a miraculous escape. Some of the bus passengers also sustained minor injuries. The maxi cab was carrying 25 passengers.
All victims relatives
All the deceased are the relatives of the bridegroom. They were on their way to attend the marriage of Shamima and Abdul Rahim. Maxi cab driver Muhammad Ali had made two trips earlier from Muloor to Majur Masjid.
Medical Education Minister and district in-charge Minister Dr V S Acharya, Opposition leader Dharam Singh, KPCC president Mallikarjuna Kharge, MP Manorama Madhvaraj and others visited the family .
