Kynkyny Art Gallery previewed the paintings of Panchanan Sutradhar, a final year student from Chitra Kala Parishat. This first exhibition titled ‘Solitude’ has works in gouache on paper and projects the artist’s concept of loneliness.
He says, “Even in loneliness, we are not alone. We have thoughts and images in our mind, when we are awake or when we dream”. The imagery and narrative forms emerge from rural themes. The artist’s palette, partial to dark backgrounds, shades of browns of the body and turquoise clothes, set off the semi-abstract portraiture of the ‘Flute Player’ with evocative expressive eyes.
Three paintings titled ‘Dreams’, map individual aspirations of a person. ‘Loneliness of teenage’, is a contemporary situation.
Others like the woman with wings in ‘Dream to fly’, and ‘Me and the River’, capture meditative moods. The eyes, in the otherwise expressionless faces, draw attention.
Trees, flowers, birds, children in the background — are all captured through variegated lines and brush strokes.
Trish White of Cicso Systems, Ruchika Chanana, Mukund Thatti, Navin Kini, were among those invited for the preview.
Namarata Radhakrishan of Kynkyny said, “Panchanan’s works are rather mature, reflecting themes in a romantic way. I wanted Bangalore to see his work before he leaves for Shantiniketan to do his Masters in Art.” “It takes me a month to do each painting,” says the artist.
“It’s the intricate details in the background that need attention and the movement of garments, shading and exploration of activities of life. I want to project sorrow and joy, veiled with nostalgia,” he adds.
On exhibit till June 10 at Kynkyny, #33/220, N S Iyengar Street, Off Railway Parallel Road, Kumara Park.
