India will be represented by Anup Sridhar and Saina Nehwal in the men’s and women’s singles in the badminton event of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games from August 8 to 24. The official list is yet to be announced by the Badminton World Federation.
In the latest world rankings released on Thursday by the BWF, Anup is at No 33, while Saina is at No 31. That means the two have qualified for the Olympics. Arvind Bhat is ranked No 46 but he will not be able to make it since only one entry is allowed in each event for countries ranked 17 and below in the world.
India’s top women’s doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Shruti Kurien are ranked No 26 and they too will not be able to make it since the top 12 pairs in the world qualify and the rest of the places in the draw will be filled up on the basis of continental quotas.
