Both Tumkur bus station and Kunigal bus station were demolished at the same time. While construction of bus station in Tumkur is nearing completion, works on bus station in Kunigal has not been launched yet.
A team under the supervision of the assistant commissioner carried out the eviction drive on May 5, 2006.
Without giving any prior notices, nearly 50-year old malls, vegetable shops and commercial complexes, which paid rent regularly, were demolished.
The officials promised the shop owners then that a hi-tech bus stop would be constructed.
Helpless
However they haven’t kept their words. Hundreds of families which earned the bred through their businesses in the bus station premises have been rendered helpless. Many of them have migrated in search of better jobs.
Besides, two petrol bunks were also evicted to acquire the land for the construction of bus stand.
Delay
Delay in bus station construction has caused the public nuisance. There is no basic facilities including toilets and drinking water.
The bus station has turned an open toilet and dumping yard for many poultries. According to the sources close to the officials delay was due to technical problems as well as involvement of certain vested interests.
Even the lack of political will is also a reason for the delay.
