The spiralling prices of essential commodities have pinned down the helpless common man to the floor. This emphasises the scant regard and utter contempt the Central Government has for the very people who voted them to power.
We have a Finance Minister who rushes off to the US using the taxpayers money when the stock market crashes.
He should understand that stock markets do not indicate the health of an economy. We are reverting to the Raj days when our leaders spent major part of their lives abroad, and then returned to rule India after learning ways to make the rich richer and poor poorer. If a farmer’s family commits suicide because of abject poverty, we have a Nero in Finance Minister who assures us that everything is well, just be patient.
Should we be patient till we all muster enough courage to commit suicide, Mr Chidambaram, when you have created such a situation that the majority of wealth is in the hands a of a minority?

Nonsense, Bush!

It is really shocking to read the news story Bush pins blame on India ( DH, May 4). How can Bush pass such a comment that the Indian middle class is responsible for the rising demand for food? It is a known fact that the amount of food-wasted everyday by rich Americans can feed thousands of poor in the developing word. Let them mend their ways and behave like concerned human beings before blaming India.

Far from truth
Sir,
The observations of US President George W Bush, pointing finger at India are far from the truth. In fact, America is the main culprit for global food crisis, as one third of its food grains are utilised for the production of bio-fuel.
Also, the severe drought in Australia for two consecutive years exerted an additional impact on food crisis. Then, how can India be blamed, when per capita consumption of nutrition in India is much lesser than that of the US?

One fails to understand the brou ha ha over the remarks from US President George W Bush on the newly acquired affluence of India’s middle class contributing to the global price rise of food products. We should feel proud because he has actually paid rich tributes to India for improving the standard of living of its people. In fact, his analysis is not as preposterous as the one advanced by our own Union agriculture minister, Sharad Pawar, some time back.

One cannot really understand the logic behind Hindu Makkal Katchi’s objection to actress Mallika Sherawat’s attire. These moral police are nowhere near the picture when actresses wear worse outfit on the silver screen. To gain cheap publicity and mileage, these people are resorting to such tactics and the media should ignore them.

It is funny to read that a young activist has submitted a petition at the Periampet police station claiming that actress Mallika Sherawat’s dress and behaviour at an audio event hurt the sentiments of Tamils. Whether one should wear a particular dress is a personal decision of a person. Times have changed; women are bolder in their views and dressing too.
