Desi, inaugurated its annual exhibition cum sale of handlooms and distributed the Desi annual award at a ceremony conducted on Saturday.
Handloom sector thrives in rural India and Desi sets a platform to give these workers a chance to display their talent.
The function was inaugurated by Dr Paresh Kumar and the awards were distributed br Sudhakar Rao.
The event was presided over by M S Sathyu. The Desi award for exemplary service in handloom sector was given to Bellary Sarvodaya Khadi and Village Industries Sangha and Dastakar Andhra.
Various clothing as well as decorative items are being sold at the sale that followed the event. Khadi dominates most of the products like kurtas, shawls, mats, bags and purses.
Many of the decorative items include Kondapilli toys and detailed intricate figures made of soap stone.
Jaglur Khadi, Kambli project and Dastakar Andhra have their stalls selling a variety of products. Dastakar Andhra is displaying naturally dyed cotton handloom sarees and readymade garments while Jaglur Khadi is flaunting soft, khadi readymade garments for men and women produced by Sarvodaya Sangha, Alur.
Some of the accessories put on display are made out of traditional hand-woven woollen fabric (kambli). Apart from this, adorning the gallery are pictures and photographs displaying the intricate process involved in the making of khadi as well as the workers in the handloom industry. The exhibition-cum-sale is on at Chitrakala Parishat till May 6 every day between 10.30 am to 7 pm.
