It was a powerful video that unleashed the violinist in Pavithra Thirumalai. She doesn't remember the violinist in the video. All that she remembers is that she was just seven years old when she watched it and lo, she immediately decided that violin was her calling and has not looked back since.
Born and bred in Botswana, Pavithra treated Bangaloreans to a power packed hour-long performance at the St Mark's Cathedral on Saturday evening.
Sure, Pavithra fed intoxicating fare. But it was not a run-of -the-mill Saturday night stuff as Pavithra belied her age and shone through.
The concert began with Allemanda Archangelo Corelli's piece. The fast, angry and powerful number was performed with much verve.
The second one was a light and sprightly Spanish dance number, transforming the atmosphere into a gypsy trail. F Seitz Concert no 5 was moderately fast but easy and smooth. Max Bruch's Swedish dance was rather romantic and slow.
“It's hard to get me to play slow numbers, my tutor back at school would have to rein me in and get me to play slow. My mind always sways towards fast numbers," says 14-year-old Pavithra, who is the lead violinist in her school in Botswana.
Britney Spears and Antonio Vivaldi, though two very extremes in the matter of style of music, are among her favourite performers whose performance and music influence her a great deal.
She was accompanied by Lalitha Choweller on the piano.
