Virdhawal Khade ended the meet on a high by winning the 50 metres freestyle event on the concluding day of the 51st Malaysia Invitation Open swimming meet here on Sunday.
Virdhawal clocked 23.03 seconds and qualified for the Olympics in the event and also set a new meet record. The Olympic qualification time is 23.13. The Kolhapur resident has also qualified for the 100 and 200M events at the Beijing Games.
Shikha Tandon won a silver medal in the 50M freestyle event in 26.37 seconds. This is also a new National record. The old record was held by Shikha with a time of 26.50. She missed out on the Olympic qualifying time of 26.32. In the 200M backstroke, Rehan Poncha won in a time of 2:09.38 and Rohit Havaldar finished third in a time of 2:10.29. The Olympic qualifying time in this event is 2:03.91.
Poncha also won a silver medal in the 100M butterfly clocking 56.61. The Olympic qualifying time in this event is 54.71. Khade has won a total of three gold medals with meet records in the 50M, 100M freestyle and 50M butterfly events and two silver (the 200, 400M freestyle). He created National records in all his events. Sejwal won two gold in the 100 and 200M breaststroke and one silver (50M breaststroke) with national records.
