After Tanvir's unbelievable six for 14 skittled out Super Kings — whose skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni elected to bat on winning the toss — for a paltry 109, Rajasthan Royals romped home with 34 balls to spare.
Set 110 for a victory, the home team openers Graeme Smith (35 n.o., 44b, 4x4) and Swapnil Asnodkar (32, 30b, 5x4) put on 78 runs for the opening wicket to set up the win and take the team to the top of the standings.
Winning runs
Smith hit the winning runs off Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan to bring up the home side's fifth win on the trot. It was Chennai's second straight loss. For Super Kings, S Vidyut and Muttiah Muralitharan claimed a wicket apiece.
Earlier, it was Tanvir (6/14) all the way. Tanvir's was the first five-wicket haul in the IPL so far. He was ably supported by Munaf Patel (2/16), Shane Watson (1/19) and skipper Shane Warne (1/29).
Tanvir began in brilliant fashion, removing Parthiv Patel (0) leg before off the first ball of the match. The Pakistani pacer then had New Zealander Stephen Fleming trapped in front to send both the Super Kings openers back to the hut in the very first over.
Early damage
Tanvir then had S Vidyut caught by Shane Watson for five in the third over to have the visitors reeling at 11 for three. The Pakistani pacer returned for his second spell in the 17th over and removed Super Kings top-scorer Albie Morkel (42) and Muttiah Muralitharan for a duck in the same over.
The left-armer bowled Makhaya Ntini (11) to end Chennai's innings in the 19th over.
S Badrinath (15) and Raina (27), for a brief period, appeared to repair the early damage for the Chennai side with a fourth-wicket stand of 27 but Tanvir's new-ball partner, Shane Watson, cut it short when he had Badrinath caught off his own bowling.
Ace leg-spinner Warne got his opposite number MS Dhoni, after surviving two viciously turning balls earlier, in the eighth over. Half the team back in the hut for a mere 44, the visitors had their backs to the wall. Munaf Patel then removed Raina and Joginder Sharma (0) in the 15th over to have Kings well and truly on their knees.
