Sir, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chaterjee’s move to withdraw his notice to the Privilege Committee in which he had referred 32 MPs for their disorderly/unruly behaviour comes as a huge disappointment. Having boldly made a decision that was overdue for the past several months to initiate an effective disciplinary measure, one is left wondering as to what really prompted the Speaker to make a volte-face.
Apparently he has opted for immediate peace from those referred to the Privilege Committee at the cost of what was a much needed disciplinary measure at his point of time. At least now, after this fracas, one hopes that better sense will prevail on the habitual offenders from the Opposition benches and that they will refrain from repeating their aggressively obstructionist and unruly activities inside the august house so as to uphold its dignity in the right manner.

Gandhi’s wishes
Sir, Congressmen swear by Mahatma Gandhi. But, to what extent are they following his ideals? Veerappa Moily and Janardhan Poojary have declared that they would allow free sale of liquor if the Congress comes to power in Karnataka.
The effects of drinking would cause maximum problems to the poor who can never recover from the horrible effects of consuming arrack. Gandhiji wanted the Congress to be dissolved and converted into a social organisation. Will Sonia and other Congressmen as they go round the Gandhi samadhi, fulfill the Mahatma’s final ambition?

Poll outcome
Sir, Fighting an election has always been a challenge for our netas, but the forthcoming one in Karnataka is a different ball game altogether, thanks to the delimitation exercise. Also, the guidelines from the Election Commission are not helping matters. Perceptibly, it is not an uncomplicated assignment for anyone to envisage the poll outcome. Our state will be known nation wide as the first ever state to face elections after the delimitation exercise.

Crocodile tears
Sir, Some political leaders who shed crocodile tears openly at rallies for the sake of garnering votes need no sympathy and voters should not take it for granted but exercise their franchise according to the dictates of their conscience. Such politicians who gets votes and wins in the elections and forget the electorate’s later on should be outrightly rejected.

Favouring Cong
Sir, From the way the Central Election Commission functions in Karnataka, it is apparent that it is determined to oblige the Congress in this election. There was a proposal to ban exit polls, but the Commission has not given its nod. If the Election Commissioner facilitates for the victory of the Congress there is a possibility of his being rewarded with gubernatorial position or ministerial berth in the cabinet as in the case of M S Gill, the former Election Commissioner.

Normal humps
Sir, Continuous narrow road humps numbering about six with a spacing between them have been installed near the Cantonment railway station causing problems for the passing vehicles. These humps may slow down the vehicles but could cause severe damage to the suspension of 4 wheelers and shock absorbers of 2 wheelers moving frequently over these humps. A normal hump will serve the purpose at this busy junction.
