With the Twenty20 format taking cricket by storm, a concerned International Cricket Council (ICC) has convened a two-day meeting starting on Monday to discuss ways to protect and promote Test cricket and also deliberate upon the volume of the game worldwide.
The meeting of ICC’s Cricket Committee will also tackle issues concerning the greater use of technology on umpiring decisions and bad light.
The trialling of an umpires’ decision review system, the formulation of playing conditions for the Champions Trophy this year and the World Twenty20 2009, as well as the results of ICC-commissioned research into such issues as bad light will also be on the radar for this meeting.
The committee is chaired by former India captain Sunil Gavaskar and includes ICC General Manager David Richardson, former Australian captain Mark Taylor, ex-Pakistan captain Majid Khan and former West Indies fast bowler Michael Holding.
It also features Umpire of the Year Simon Taufel, chief ICC match referee and former Sri Lankan captain Ranjan Madugalle, Kenyan captain Steve Tikolo, South African coach Mickey Arthur and FICA CEO Tim May.
Under the trial of an umpire decision review system, players will be permitted to request the on-field umpire to review his own decision in consultation with the television umpire.
The idea of allowing the batting team to choose when to take one of the three Power Plays during the Champions Trophy and World Twenty20 2009 will also be looked into.
The committee will formulate recommendations to the Chief Executives’ Committee (CEC) and the ICC Board for approval. The next meetings of those committees are set for Dubai from June 29 to July 4.
