Yelahanka with a total 2,38,831 votes, post-delimitation has become a general constituency with several villages and hoblis like Hesarghatta, Dasanapura and the erstwhile Yelahanka CMC coming under its fold.
The run up to the polls sees an upsurge for the BJP. Its candidate and former ZP member S R Vishwanath seems to be popular at the moment. Pitted against Congress candidate, B Chandrappa and producer of Kannada movie Mungaru Male E Krishnappa of the JD(S), Vishwanath who hails from the Yelahanka hobli is likely to garner a majority of the votes from the Yelahanka hobli, Yelahanka new, old towns and the Hesaraghatta hobli.
Similarly, there are around 25,000 Lingayat voters spread across the Dasnapaura hobli and the Hesarghatta hobli who may support the BJP.
Congress candidate B Chandrappa who is also a ZP member is likely to bag the SC/ST and backward cast votes which account to nearly 30,000 and 65,000 votes respectively.
Besides, haling from the Dasanapura hobli, Mr Chandrappa has the backing from the villages in the periphery of this hobli which has a voter population of 83,000 voters.
The Congress can also take heart that it was their candidate B Prasanna Kumar who was elected from Yelahanka in 2004. E Krishnappa contesting from the JD(S) also hails from the Dasanapura hobli and is likely to split the Vokkaliga votes.
With a total of eight candidates in the fray and with the BSP and the SP fielding a candidate each Yelahanka is expected to see an exciting battle on May 10.
