Jyotirmayee Nagasaibabu, who was doing her post graduation in Physiotherapy at the University of Wolverhampton was found dead in her hostel room which she shared with four other students from Andhra Pradesh, official sources said.
Jyotirmayee was hit on the head as she opened the door of the room and died on the spot while her roommate sustained injuries.
The condition of the injured student, whose name has not been disclosed, was stated to be out of danger. Police have initiated house-to-house inquiries at the scene.
West Midlands police said forensic tests were being carried out at the premises and a post-mortem examination would be carried out on the body soon.
According to sources, burglary seemed to be the cause of the attack. They said Jyotirmayee was in the hostel along with four other Telugu-speaking students shortly before her death.
However, residents in buildings adjacent to the hostel and opposite it said there appeared to be only two persons inside the room at the time of the incident.
Jyotirmayee’s father Saibabu alleged in Vijaywada that her daughter was murdered in her apartment. A senior of Jyotirmayee called up in the early hours about the tragedy, he said.
Lal Miah, whose mother lives next door to the house where Jyotirmayee stayed, told newspersons “From what I’ve heard it sounds like it was a fight between two persons.
“The ambulance came and took one person away but we heard that one was still in there and it was a woman who had died,” he said.
“We couldn’t believe it really. I didn’t know the people who were there. I heard they were foreigners and there were a total of four of them living there,” he added.
Another man, Moses Khan, who lives across the road, said: “From what I’ve been told there were four of them living there but there were only two persons in at the time and it was some kind of stabbing.”
