First-timers many this time

Bangalore, dhns:  As many as 2,253 aspirants are testing their electoral fortunes in the three-phase Assembly elections.

There is a significant rise in the number of candidates this election compared to the 2004 polls wherein in as many as 1,715 were in fray.

The highest number of 941 candidates are in fray in the first phase which will witness as many as 89 constituencies going to polls spread across 11 constituencies.

As many as 589 candidates are in the fray for the second leg in 66 constituencies in 10 districts and 711 from eight districts spread over 69 constituencies.

Appointed as vice-president

Bangalore, dhns:  H M Mariyappa has been appointed as the senior vice-president of the State unit of Janata Dal (Secular) with immediate effect, according to a press release issued here on Thursday.
