He was deported to India after serving several months in jail in the UK for withholding information about his brother late Kafeel Ahmed's plot to carry out a terror attack.
Sabeel arrived by a British Airways flight at 03: 43 am and was escorted by two Metropolitan police officers from London. Family members of Dr Sabeel Ahmed gave him a warm welcome. However, Sabeel managed to give the slip to mediapersons and was whisked away by security officials through the rear gate of the airport.
Family overjoyed
Sabeel’s mother Dr Zakia Ahmed told reporters, “Joy among our family members knows no end as Sabeel has returned. I will never admit that my son has done something wrong. Of the two sons, one died, while another returned safe. That’s more than enough for any mother,” she added.
She did not respond when asked whether it was not wrong on the part of Kafeel to make an attempt to blow up the airport. After reaching home, Sabeel refused to speak to the waiting media. Zakia explained that her son was reluctant to speak and was tired as well. She would convince him but he would take a couple of days to speak to the media, she added. A London court had ruled that Sabeel would be released from custody and deported to India because of the time he had already served while on trial. Dr Sabeel was arrested in Liverpool on June 30 2007.
Hours after Sabeel came to his house, he was put under police surveillance at his residence. A senior police official said following deportation of Sabeel, certain formalities would have to be completed. The State and Central intelligence agencies would keep a strict vigil on him, he added and said that the police were likely to question him about the events that led to the attack on the Glasgow airport.
Dr Sabeel Ahmed was a suspect arrested after the 2007 Glasgow International Airport attack. He worked as a doctor at Halton Hospital in Runcorn, Northern England and at the nearby Warrington Hospital. He was arrested from Liverpool on June 30 in connection with the failed terror plot. He remained in custody for nearly 8 months.
The police had charged him with concealing information regarding the terror plot. However, Sabeel was convicted and then ordered to be released as he had served out his sentence during the trial period.
Sabeel studied at the Dr B R Ambedkar Medical College - affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences between 1998 and 2003 and completed his internship in 2003-2004, moving to the UK in November 2004 to pursue higher studies.
