Representatives of two Malaysian state government departments have been presented brooms to literally “sweep out” poor work attitudes and take action against non-productive employees.
Senior Minister Mohammad Khir Toyo presented the brooms on Monday at the Selangor Tax Collection Special Award 2006 function. He said the awardees did not meet the target of 90 per cent in the current year and 70 per cent arrears collection for 2006.
Khir told reporters after the presentation ceremony that the brooms were awarded so that the departments “sweep out” their poor attitude towards work and take action against non-productive employees.
The brooms were given to the representatives of the two departments in conjunction with the Quality Month 2007 of the state government.
“They did not achieve the minimum collection targets and they also failed to take action against any officer, as if they tolerated the poor performance,” he said, adding the state government would act against them.
Last year, the Hulu Selangor district and land office managed to collect only 55 per cent of current taxes and 56 per cent of arrears while the Hulu Selangor District Council posted 66.9 per cent and 23.4 per cent, respectively.
Departments which performed well were rewarded with trips overseas, as an incentive, national news agency Bernama said.
