The winter, the City has been experiencing unusually chilly weather. On Thursday, the minimum temperature had dipped to a record 8.4 degrees Celsius, the lowest-ever recorded in the last 20 Novembers.
The minimum temperature recorded on Friday was 9.6 degrees Celsius, said Prof Rajegowda of University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS).
The Met department, however, recorded 14.6 degrees Celsius as minimum temperature on Friday. On Thursday, it recorded a minimum temperature of 12.7 degrees Celsius.
Why are readings of Agrometeorology, UAS and Met department different?
“It depends on where the temperatures are recorded. If it’s done in a place covered by concrete buildings, the temperature will be a little high. If done in the open field, it’ll be low,” Prof Rajegowda said.
Why the chill?
Vijay Raghavan, Met department director, said the chilly weather is due to the blowing of northerly wind. Once winds from Bay of Bengal start blowing, temperatures will come to normal in the City, he added.
According to Prof Rajegowda, there have been no clouds in the region for the past 10 days. This has increased out-going radiation, which is continuously cooling the earth surface.
If there were clouds in the region, they would have stopped out-going radiation. Besides, the duration of night time has increased in the last few days, bringing down the temperature, he added.
Flights delayed
Meanwhile, several flights were delayed at the Bangalore airport on Friday due to foggy conditions. Both incoming and outgoing flights were delayed for about 15 to 20 minutes between 7.30 to 8 pm due to foggy conditions, said airport sources.
