Despite heavy downpour throughout the taluk, a good yield is expected even this year. The paddy seedlings were planted in over 3,000 hectares of land in the taluk, where high yielding as well as traditional varieties of paddy seeds have been sown. Traditional varieties including Asudi, Valya, Koimatturu and Hegge and high yielding varieties of seeds including IET, Abhilash, Tunga and Intan were sown.
Though the Tunga variety of seeds distributed by the Agriculture Department for the first time showed retarded growth in the early stages, after a brief period, the seedlings showed fast growth. Even corn has provided good yield and farmers consider that it will be a suitable variety to be grown in the Malnad region.
The pest attack and over 200 cms of rain that poured in the taluk does not seem to have caused any fatal damage to the crop. However, the farmers in the border areas of the Kudremukh National Park region witnessed frequent attack of wild animals and they had to make all out efforts to save their crops from the wild animals.
As rains continued till the end of October, the fields which were dependent on rain water for irrigation purposes, did not face the problem of shortage of water. Though the rain has receded in November, farmers still fear the occurance of rain at the time of harvesting.
