18 tonnes of oil retrieved
Mangalore, DHNS: The salvage experts from Svitzer Wijsmuller Salvage Company succeeded in retrieving 18 tonnes of furnace oil from the sunken ship M V Den Den on Saturday, off Mangalore coast.
Child rights month
Bangalore, DHNS: A series of programmes as a part of Child Rights Month (CRM) will be organised by the Domestic Child Labour Elimination Project - a partnership of the district administration, UNICEF and NGOs - from Nov 20. The campaign will kick-start with a convention of the members of the Self Help Group and Domestic Workers Union at Banappa Park to discuss domestic child labour related issues, said Project Co-ordinator, Suchitra Rao.
Govt land auction fetches Rs 2.29 cr
Bangalore, DHNS: The public auction of government land on Saturday fetched Rs 2.29 crore for the State Revenue Department. A total of six sites in Yeshwanthpura and Dasanapura hoblis in the Bangalore North Taluk were auctioned. The Department will resume auctions on November 26.
Examinations postponed
Bangalore, DHNS: The PU education department had scheduled Basic Maths exam along with the Geology on March 24. Following the request from some students, the department has postponed the basic maths exam to March 22.
Rare varieties of Bible on display
Bangalore, DHNS: Around 500 varieties of the Bible are on show at the Bangalore International Christian Book Fair. The book fair, that kicked off on Saturday at the India Campus Crusade for Christ Auditorium on Hennur Main Road (near Jyothi School), features some of the rare copies of the Bible, the organisers said on Saturday.
STL UK and OM Books India are organising the festival, that will be on till November 24. A two km-long Bible that weighs 97 kg is one of the features of the exhibition. A 10-gm Bible and a “water-proof” Bible are other highlights.
Around 10,000 Christian novels and books, geological resources, gifts and accessories are also on display. Entry to the exhibition is free. The exhibition will be open from 9 am to 8 pm.
Iskcon ready to buy agro products from farmers
Bangalore, DHNS: Iskcon has decided to purchase organically grown agricultural produces directly from organic farmers for its ‘Akshaya Patre mid-day meal programme,’ said Manager of Iskcon’s Rural Extension Services A Yogesh.
Speaking in a meeting of Karnataka Pradesh Yuvaka Raithara Samaj in Bangalore on Saturday, he said agriculture produces will be purchased through Iskcon ‘Agri Research Foundation’. The Foundation will purchase agro produces paying more than the market price.
The foundation is providing food for more than 8 lakh schoolchildren across the State everyday. “We will be purchasing large amount of agro produces regularly from farmers. The foundation needs more than 75 tonnes of tur dal in a month to serve food for children in Bangalore alone,” he said.
