Two Canadian soldiers, their interpreter and an Afghan soldier were also lost lives in the operation. These deaths have already been announced.
“Our information from the area says that 100 Taliban have been killed and wounded,” Kandahar police chief Sayed Agha Saqeb told AFP. Saqeb said that though the NATO-led soldiers used gunship helicopters in the fighting in the Zahri district, 30 kilometres west of Kandahar city, there were no casualties to civilian people.
The police chief had no breakdown for his toll, which could not be checked independently. The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said its forces were involved but it could not confirm the police toll. A Canadian military spokeswoman, Captain Catherine Larose, said Canadian troops serving under ISAF took part in the raids on Zahri.
