Two hacked to death by gang

Two youths were hacked to death by a gang in Vanigondanahalli, Taverekere, on the outskirts of the City, on Sunday night.



The two are Venkatesh (20) and Puttaraju (19). Three of their friends - Hanumantha, Manja and Mahesh - suffered serious injuries. Sources said the attack is linked to a love affair.

According to the police, Venkatesh, who was working in a printing press, was moving around with a girl from Gangondanahalli village. The girl was working in a private factory. Puttaraju, who was working in the same factory, was helping the two.

The girl's relative, a politician, was opposed to the affair and had warned Venkatesh. Earlier, there were attempts to eliminate Venkatesh.

On the fateful night when Venkatesh and his cricket team were celebrating their win at the government school playground, a 10-member armed gang came on two-wheelers and hacked Venkatesh to death. Puttaraju, who suffered multiple injuries, died on way to the hospital.Nineteen persons have been detained in this connection.
Gopi, the prime suspect, is said to be absconding.

Duty drawback scam: 1 held

The CBI sleuths have arrested a man in connection with the ‘duty drawback’ scam.The Anti-Corruption wing of the CBI arrested Nataraj M Kanchan on charges of cheating government to the tune of Rs 80 lakh. Nataraj has been absconding since 2002. He was arrested in Mumbai.

He was produced before Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mangalore, who remanded him to judicial custody.
It is learnt Nambunayaki Exports of Erode in Tamil Nadu, S K Exports, Mangalore and N M Exports, Mangalore were exporting readymade garments.

Nataraj, by giving a false declaration on the value of export cargo, submitted 17 shipping bills on behalf of these firms for claiming excess duty drawback under the duty drawback scheme.

Woman dies of shock

An aged woman died of shock when an armed gang struck at her house at Jakkanahalli.She has been identified as Lakkavva (70), wife of K V Byranna.

According to the police, when Lakkavva opened the rear door of her house, an armed gang stormed into the house and escaped with valuables, including Lakkavva’s mangalasutra.Lakkavva, who was helplessly watching her house being looted, died of shock.
