Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa did not attack the JD(S) on the floor of the Assembly on Monday. Neither did he make a protracted speech to defend himself or his governance.
But he succeeded in scuttling JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy from attacking the BJP. Sources said Kumaraswamy had prepared 40 pages of notes to ‘expose’ the BJP. When Yeddyurappa declared that he would submit his resignation to the Governor around 4:40 pm in the House, Kumaraswamy was closeted with his brother Revanna in the chambers of the Speaker.
The CM, who moved a motion seeking vote of confidence at 3:05 pm made a brief introduction on political developments and how the coalition government was formed.
Opposition leaders led by Dharam Singh, Mallikharjun Kharge (both Cong), J C Madhuswamy (JD-U) and Vatal Nagaraj (KCVP) criticised Yeddyurappa for not resigning despite the JD(S) issuing a whip against the government.
The Congress leaders said that Yeddyurappa was clinging to power though morally he had lost power. The only dream of Yeddyurappa was to become the CM, they ridiculed.
Referring to JD(S) leaders, Vatal Nagaraj asked what happened to the affidavits submitted to the governor. At this juncture, an emotional Yeddyurappa stood up and said Deve Gowda and his son Kumaraswamy wanted mines and urban development departments, much against the agreement drawn 20 months ago to continue the support. He also disclosed that BJP decided to realign with JD(S) only after Gowda personally met party leaders L K Advani, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and others in New Delhi.
Agreement
Yeddyurappa said, “I have always said that I will not continue in this chair if I have to go against the agreement. I will go and submit resignation to the Governor”.
After announcing this he rushed out of the House, and went with his party MLAs towards Raj Bhavan. Later the Speaker announced that the CM himself declared that he had lost confidence and hence the question of seeking vote didn’t arise.
He later adjourned the House sine die.
