I made a mistake, says BSY
DH News Service, Bangalore:
B S Yeddyurappa after resigning as CM said he would have continued in power for next 19 months, had he agreed to the JD(S) party's demands.

In a public interaction programme in a private channel, Yeddyurappa said the JD(S) demanded that its ministers should have portfolios of Mines and Geology and Housing and Urban Development.

But the BJP did not agree as the demand was not part of the oral agreement that BJP and JD(S) had come to 21 months ago.

Soon after submitting the resignation to the governor, Mr Yeddyurappa chose to reach out to the larger audience by attending a live public interaction programme of a private channel.

Here are excerpts from the interaction.

What really went wrong between you and the JD(S)?
My party had already hit the streets and was preparing to face the elections. The JD(S) leaders approached us stating that they are ready to extend support unconditionally. But, later on, they started putting conditions. They wanted to have all important portfolios. BJP did not agree to that. Yet, we had confidence that JD(S) MLAs would support us on the floor of the House. But, they cheated us.

Don’t you think your hunger for power landed you in the present situation?
BJP is the single largest party in the State. Had the BJP been hungry for power we would have staked the claim to form the government soon after Kumaraswamy resigned as CM. But we did not do that. Instead, we demanded that the Assembly should be dissolved. We realigned with the JD(S) only after leaders of that party assured us that they are ready to form the government on the basis of 21-month old agreement.

But were you confident of JD(S) getting support till Sunday evening?
Yes, I was. Because Kumaraswamy himself had come along with us to parade in front of the Governor and the President as well. All 129 legislators submitted affidavits expressing  unconditional support to the BJP-JD(S) coalition.

At last, do you agree that you committed a mistake?
Yes, I do agree. We should not have believed JD(S) leaders.

What are your future plans?
We will tour the state. We will appeal to the public to keep the family of selfish people away from politics. I am confident that the  people will support the BJP and we will form the government on our own.
