The pathetic sight of medical wastes dumped around the hospital only points at the negligence of the contractors who have been given the contract of waste disposal here. Whatever be the reason for such a sight to crop up in a hospital, the patients and visitors are paying the cost for this as it is causing great inconvenience to them.
This heap of waste can clearly be tagged as dangerous wastes, which need to be disposed systematically. In several places, there are separate incinerators in place to treat such wastes. Ironically, here used syringes, injections and several other medical wastes have been dumped openly in the hospital premises.
On Tuesday, similar heap of wastes was even found outside TB treatment centre. The situation worsened as the waste was littered all over by the cattle and stray dogs which messed up the dump in search for food.
According to the rules, the medicine bottles must be sold off immediately but here in the hospital, the medicine bottles are collected for months together and then sold off. Since the collected bottles have not been sold, the place where these bottles are stored is full and there is no space for further storage of waste bottles. This is also a reason why the waste bottles are dumped with other medical wastes in the premises.
Apart from this, the sewage water from the hospital is being left out to an open drain near Omkareshwara Temple road. The foul whiff from this drainage has made life difficult for people and business entrepreneurs here. Pedestrians too are facing problems due to this.
Though the City Municipal Council has directed the hospital to take note of the situation and do the needful, the hospital authorities have brushed the directions aside and have not yet taken any action to solve the problems.
Whether there were no patients coming for treatment or there were no doctors to treat the patients, a startling fact is that the TB treatment centre of the hospital has been locked for reasons better known to the hospital authorities.
On one hand, the Municipal Council has been proclaiming of giving extra attention on cleanliness and hygiene but on the other hand a centre where hygiene must be maintained has turned out to be a dump yard.
The authorities concerned must take note of the situation and try to solve the paradox, the citizens say.
