Free legal service for undertrials
DH News Service, Kolar:

Kannada is one of the best lanugages in the world. We should all protect our culture. This is the lanugage that has bagged the highest number of Jnananpeet awards. Everyone should involve in seeing that such a language develops, said Principal District and Sessions Judge A V Chandrashekar.

He was speaking after inaugurating a free legal awareness and cultural programme organised jointly by the District Legal Services Authority, district sub-jail, District Central Advocates Association and Government Law college for the benefit of the undertrials in Kolar on Thursday.

It is important for prisoners to be aware of law. Most of them turn criminals because of trying to make a fast buck. Not all undertrials are criminals and till they are proved guilty they are innocent, he said.

Everyone in the jail has special rights. There are lot of reforms now-a-days in jails. The Supreme Court has clearly stated that women prisoners should be given importance. The jail authorities should follow this direction strictly, said Mr Chandrashekar.

It is a great crime to indulge in the production, manufacturing and transportation of drugs. Even though such criminals are aware of the crime, they violate the law, he said.

If the prisoners through letters talk about the family problems then they can get the assistance of voluntary organisations. The jail officials should work towards this aim, he suggested.

Principle Civil judge Mohammed Khan M Pathan and advocate M P Narayanswamy gave a talk on legal services and different laws.

District Centre Advocates Association president K R Dhanraj and Government Law college principal P M Munireddy were present. District sub-jail superintendent Dr Imam Sab Myageri welcomed. On this occasion as part of Kannada Rajyotsava day cultural programmes were arranged.

The undertrials staged a dharana in front of the judges protesting against the lack of basic facilities in the jail and also lack of proper transport facilities to take the undertrials from the jail.

The Judge received the complaints from the undertrials and asked the jail officials to take proper action at the earliest..
