The proscribed ULFA received yet another blow, as 66 of its militants laid down weapons before top police officials in Guwahati on Thursday. The rebels gave up just nine days after 33 of their comrades surrendered to the Army at Tamulpur in western Assam.
Director General of Police (DGP) R N Mathur said that over 135 militants had laid down weapons across the state in the past few weeks. He added that the number might go up soon, as many more disillusioned rebels were keen to quit the path of violence.
Kingpin
The militants who surrendered on Thursday, included Ujjwal Gohain, the kingpin of the outfit’s extortion network in Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and other districts in eastern Assam.
