A day after her suicide, police said that they have some reports that Chithra may have ended her life because she could not convince her parents to allow her marry the man of her choice.
“When she was taken to Victoria Hospital on Monday night, an attending nurse asked her why she consumed poison. She reportedly told her that she was interested in a man, of whom her parents didn’t approve. They wanted her to get married to a groom of their choice, which she opposed,” said a police officer. “We have, however, not been able to verify the truth behind this. According to her brother Ramesh Babu, Chithra was reluctant to get married as she wanted to pursue higher studies,” he added.
Chithra (32), a PhD student of Indian Institute of Science (IISc), who boarded the bus to her home town, Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu, on Monday night, reportedly died early Tuesday morning, of self poisoning.
