The members of the Codava National Council (CNC) decided to urge the government to provide autonomous status to 45 Kodava Naadu on the Darjeeling Goorkha Land model under Sixth schedule of the constitution, at the Kodava National Day celebration.
The Kodava National Day was held at Gandhi Maidan. The ten demands were proposed by the CNC General Secretary N U Nachappa and were approved by the Kodavas.
The deamnds include: Handing over land identified near Yuvakapadi to preserve the rich Kodava culture and tradition to ‘Kodava Kund’; Separate caste-wise census of Kodavas; to initiate action against those real estate brokers who are involved in the selling of the Kodavas land. He said autonomous status should be granted to 45 Naadu. Special security should be provided to the Kodava land. Kodavas should be considered as minority linguists and special reservation should be given, he added.
He urged the government to start Kodava Shastra Jaagathika Kendra Vishwavidyalaya and to include Kodava language in the eighth schedule of the Constitution.
“We have dropped the idea of separate statehood to Kodagu. However, we will carry out struggle in the interests of the Kodavas,” Mr Nachappa announced.
