Sri Vishwesha Theertha Swami of Pejawar Math has “blessed” moves to bring Uma Bharti back to the BJP. Party president Rajnath Singh has contacted her and sought her help for the Gujarat Assembly polls.
“The life and death electoral contest” for Chief Minister Narendra Modi has led the top party leadership to extend an invitation to Ms Uma Bharti, who is determined to field 70 to 80 candidates of her party- Bharatiya Jan Shakti -in the Gujarat polls. Bharti’s move may lead to division of Hindutva votes, which may prove fatal for the BJP in the close race with Congress in Gujarat,” sources said.
Sources said the initiative had come from the Swamiji of Pejawar Math, her spiritual Guru. “The message is that all Hindu forces should remain united in the Gujarat polls,” they said.
The Gujarat chief minister has been sending desperate messages to the party president to stop Bharti from fielding candidates in the coming polls, which are turning out to be a touch and go affair.
The attempt to bring Bharti back to the BJP fold were made earlier too at the behest of BJP leader Kalyan Singh, but without success. The mercurial leader fielded 40 to 45 of her candidates in the UP polls.
“But this time round, the initiative has been taken at the top party level and may bear fruit in the interest of the party in Gujarat,” they said.
