Do the chiefs of the Army, Navy and Air Force who handle India’s missiles and nuclear arsenal, pose a security risk at the airports?
Turning down a Defence ministry proposal, the civil aviation ministry has refused to exempt the three service chiefs from mandatory security checks at the airports. This information was given by Defence Minister A K Antony on Wednesday in the Rajya Sabha. “The Ministry of Civil Aviation and Bureau of Civil Aviation Security have stated that according exemption to Service Chiefs will lead to similar demands from some other authorities,” he said.
Angry letter
The defence ministry took up the issue last year after former army chief Gen J J Singh shot an angry letter to the civil aviation authorities in the wake of exemption extended to Robert Vadra, husband of Priyanka Gandhi.
