Evening of Sufi music, Qawwalis

The Right Angle, a creative enterprise comprising the well known flautist Pravin Godkhindi, actor and fashion designer Sarika Godkhindi, writer-director and creative head of ETV Kannada channel Surendranath, presents its maiden venture — Sham-e-Sufiana, an evening of Sufi music and Qawwalis for the first time in Bangalore. Two world renowned qawwals — Haji Aslam Sabri, recipient of Sangeet Natak Academy award and Parveen Saba, popular for her unique rendition of traditional verses, will perform in concert on Saturday, November 24 at 7 pm at Shankara, Kanakapura Road, Bangalore.

The event will be organised in the Mehfil style, where audiences shall participate intimately in the Qawwali. The evening will begin with solo peformances by the artistes. This shall be followed by a short break, after which the two  maestros will perform a Jugalbandi.  Dinner for all guests will be served.

Tickets priced at Rs 500 are available at all Shankara bookstalls, Music World outlets and Calypso. For further details, please contact 9980091913.

Play for children

Ranga Shankara is all set to open its new English play for children, "The First Leaf", translated and directed by Padmavati Rao who was the Associate Director of Ranga Shankara's first production for children “Gumma Banda Gumma”. She was also an Assistant Director to Shankar Nag for the legendary TV serial Malgudi Days. “The First Leaf” was originally written in Marathi by Shrirang Godbole.

“The First Leaf” opens on November 27 and goes on till November 30. The shows are at 7:30 pm. Tickets are priced at Rs 70 and will be available at Ranga Shankara from Friday, November 23. Tele-booking counter is open on 9886998550. The morning “kids only” shows on all the days are already booked by schools. The play is for 5-year olds and above.

In less than a year since its launch, Ranga Shankara’s Theatre For Children programme has brought more than 25,000 children to Ranga Shankara to watch shows specially created for them. “Gumma Banda Gumma”, the first production under AHA! has seen 46 shows and is still going strong. Combining this with several international productions, AHA! is a sustained programme that doesn’t have a parallel on the Indian theatre scene. Every month, Ranga Shankara hosts at least four shows of a children’s play of which three are “kids only” shows in the morning. The evening shows are open to public. Ranga Shankara brings in sponsorships from individuals and corporates to fill at least one show with government school children.

Schools can call the Ranga Shankara office on 26493982 or 26592777 to make bookings for the coming months.
