Curfew lifted, Kolkata normal
Kolkata, DHNS:
The eastern metropolis limped back to normalcy on Thursday with no report of fresh violence even as army jawans deployed overnight following largescale arson and violence over Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen's stay in India and atrocities in Nandigram, kept vigil in the vulnerable areas, officials said.

City Police Commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakraborty who reviewed the situation at a high level meeting at the police headquarter at Lalbazar, said: “Normalcy is fast returning to the troubled areas and there has not been any day curfew so far and no decision has been taken on clamping of curfew at night”.

Some schools in central Kolkata remained closed as a precautionary measure. Army spokesperson Col Alok Guha said four columns of soldiers had been deployed in the affected to stage flag marches.

The Army was called out on Wednesday to conduct flag march on the streets of central Kolkata which witnessed large-scale violence during a three-hour shutdown called by the All India Minorities Forum. The state administration would take a decision late on Wednesday evening on whether the army would undertake flag march in the violence-hit areas or whether night curfew would be reimposed after a thorough assessment of the law and order.

As of now, army and police have jointly been patrolling the affected areas of the city.
