It belongs to the kingfisher family and is fond of eating snakes and lizards. The Kookaburra's rolling, laughing call is one of the best-known sounds in the animal world. It starts in a "Kook-kook-kook" and ends in a "ha-ha-ha".
Can you imagine a group of Kookaburras laughing crazily together throwing back their heads and flicking their tails up and down every morning and evening? No wonder the locals call it the "bushman's clock!" We in India may not have seen the bird but do you know this song? It is as well known as the Kookaburra's laugh.
The Kookaburra Song
Kookaburra sits on the old gum tree
Merry merry king of the bush is he
Laugh Kookaburra, laugh Kookaburra
Gay your life must be.
Kookaburra sits on the old gum tree
Eating all the gumdrops he can see
Stop Kookaburra, stop Kookaburra
Leave some gums for me.
Kookaburra sits on the old gum tree
Counting all the monkeys he can see
Stop Kookaburra, stop Kookaburra
That's no monkey, that's ME!!!
