Chairs”, an exhibition of photographs by Kenneth Menzies is being held at Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat from November 22 to 28. In “Chairs” Kenneth chronicles chairs in their natural environment and creates an interplay of chair and human, exploring form, beauty, situation, emotion and relationships, in his inimitable style.
Created for function chairs have an identity and life of their own. Some blend in, some stand out in their environments, yet each unique in its own right.
Says Kenneth, “Chairs are so integral a part of our lives, that we hardly ever notice them at all. Yet they are there, witness to the events that make our lives, spectators to all our emotions, always available when we need to rest our bodies.
“Beyond function, they are objects of creation, reflecting man’s ability to define form and embellish his world. So there they are: objects of beauty, beyond just being objects of utility. Each of them, with a life and destiny of th
eir own! Some choosing to blend into their surroundings, some choosing to stand out. Each with a unique identity of theirits own. A life even. And stories to tell. For me, chairs are like people. Intriguing!
“The more I discover them, the more I am amazed. The more they saturate and delight. To me, they are as inseparable as life and love.
“In this collection of images – surely the first of many exhibitions on the subject, I chronicle chairs in their natural environment, and I create an interplay of chair and human, exploring form, beauty, situation, emotion and relationships.
“I am in love with chairs, and I hope you too will grow to love them, or at least look at them differently.”
