Music by senior citizens
A Deva Raju

To achieve something that’s of importance in any field, it is imperative that one puts their heart and soul into achieving that dream. V Nagabhushanam, a senior citizen in Muthyalanagar has done just that by dedicating his time to the field of music. He organises concerts by veteran musicians on the last day of every month at BEL Ganapathi Temple, Jalahalli.

As the Managing Trustee of Raagasudhalaya Charitable Trust, an academy for the promotion of music and fine arts, Nagabhushanam has been doing his best to popularise classical as well as carnatic music amongst people at large by inviting well-known musicians from various parts of the City and State. He also provides a platform for various musicians to exhibit their talent apart from bringing many musicians — young and old — together.

Since it is Nagabhushanam's long cherished dream to stabilise the academy before handing it over to his successor, he has been working hard to raise funds for its development. Out of the money that he manages to raise, Nagabhushanam offers an honorarium, as a token of appreciation, to all artistes at the monthly concerts.

Help for veterans

Along with these concerts, he has started a scheme called Vaatsalya wherein the academy, at their annual day, honours veteran musicians who have been forgotten with time. The scheme presents a cash prize worth Rs 5000 to two well-known musicians whose financial position has been deteriorating. “Honouring such deserving musicians is indeed a true service that the academy has been doing since last year and it will continue to do so,” says Nagabhushanam adding that they also conduct annual Purandaradasa and Thyagaraja Aaraadhana programmes in February at the same venue as the concerts.

Nagabhushanam, who has 98 musical programmes to his credit till date, will have his 99th concert on November 24 this year and successfully reach his 100th mark on December 23.

To meet all these expenses — both monthly concerts and annual days celebrations — Nagabhushanam is looking for philanthropists to assist in the functioning of the academy.

Those who wish to contribute can reach the academy at No 673, ‘Shivanandala Hari’, 5th Main, MES Road, Muthyalanagar. Ph: 23451551.
