Sine Maathu, as part of their monthly cinema visitations and film appreciation workshop series, this Sunday is screening the highly accoladed and award-winning Kannada film Daatu.

The aim  is to imbibe good cinema culture and better film appreciation among participations by viewing the film and critically dissecting it in a discussion with the film’s director as also other experts and critics.
The workshop, in its earlier sittings has screened critically acclaimed Kannada films such as Nayi Nerala, Beru, Mussanje, Mouni, Artha, Bara, Aaspota and Cyanide. Shivarudraiah, also an actor and acclaimed photographer has to credit directed films such as Chaitrada Chiguru and Aamasa.

Scripted and written by Lakshmipathi Kolar & directed by K Shivarudraiah, Daatu, has been shot on location at Theerthahalli. Annappa, a tax collector and his wife Sharada are compassionate individuals, and respected by everyone. Once while cleaning the idols of puja room, she removes a bundle of anklets of their ancestors. For her folly she performs a 21-day prayer of Mastamma in the temple campus of Dharmakunda, as penance. Around same time a cloth merchant Usman Khan comes to the village to sell his ware and casts an evil eye on Sharada and kidnaps her. Sharada’s absence creates panic in the family and the village.

Usman Khan wants Sharada to embrace Islam and marry him. Sharada somehow escapes captivity and reaches the village. The village heads are however now reluctant to accept her back. They decide that Sharada could join the family only during the sacred Ganga water bathing ceremony. Sharada silently adorns the hereditary anklet and leaves the village with her son to lead a new life.

The screening, which will be followed by an interactive session with film director, the crew and the cast, is at 5 pm on Sunday at Sine Maathu,  K V Subbanna Aaptha Rangamandira, 151, VII Cross, I Stage, Teachers Colony, Opp Vasudha Bhavan, Near Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering.
