The movie, for most of the families, at least for those who consider their girl child, a burden to invest anything upon - be it on her education or her progress - and think a ‘commodity’ to be sold, a burden to be lessened as soon as possible and confine her to kitchen, has something to say about her strengths and potentials too.
The film which is a remake of Kante Kutre Kanali, a Telugu movie, is still relevant and stands out as a mirror to our societal systems, which still treats a woman an ‘outsider’, in her own family. Rekha’s role as a daughter is a powerful one, but her acting suffers, which in turn has its effects on the movie. On the other hand, SPB’s and Lakshmi’s role as parents is touchy. Jyothi (Rekha), who hails from a family which denies her education in spite of her good academic performance, pursues higher studies and becomes independent. On the other hand, her parents who support her brother have their dreams shattered, as whom they think their backbone, ditches them finally to their utter shock. Ultimately the daughter takes care of the abandoned parents at the cost of her marriage, saying its not a sacrifice, but the duty of every child.
Though the plot can be said ‘an old wine in a new bottle,’ it could have been crafted better and made more appealing as the setting looks completely outdated. While the first half has nothing much to offer the second half keeps you engaged. The music fails to impress not to speak about the camera work too.
