TENNIS / Good Earth Super Series
Ronit, Ankita score doubles
DH News Service, Bangalore:

It was double delight for Delhi’s Ronit Bisht and Gujarat’s Ankita Raina as they won both the under-16 and 14 titles in the boys’ and girls’ sections respectively in the Good Earth Super Series tennis tournament at the KSLTA courts here on Friday.

Ronit won the U-16 title beating Himachal Pradesh’s Digvijay Singh 6-0, 6-2. He had earlier beaten top-seeded Mohit Mayur 6-1, 6-2 to clinch the U-14 title.

In the girls’ U-16 final, third-seeded Ankita upset Tamil Nadu’s Sharon Paul 6-2, 6-1 to take the crown, while she registered a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Andhra Pradesh’s Sowjanya B to clinch the U-14 crown.

Dull finale
The boys’ U-16 final was a lacklustre one with an injured Digvijay taking the court. The injury to his right shoulder showed as he could not serve normally. However, Digvijay put up a brave front and did his best against an opponent who had already claimed the U-14 title. Even with the injury, Digvijay managed to run around and give Ronit an anxious moment or two.

For Ronit, who has won two U-14 titles already this year including at the Nationals, he just had to hang in there. It was just a matter of time before he took home home the silverware.

In the girls section, the going was rather easy for Ankita in both finals. Her rivals Sharon (U-16) and Sowjanya (U-14) barely managed to counter the onslaught from the ninth standard student, who trains in Pune under Hemant Bendre. Maintaining the pressure throughout, it was not too difficult for Ankita to wrap up the matches to add to the two titles she has won this year.

Results (all finals):
Boys: U-16: Ronit Bisht (Del) bt Digvijay Singh (HP) 6-0, 6-2. U-14: Ronit Bisht (Del) bt Mohit Mayur (TN) 6-1, 6-2.
Girls: U-16: Ankita Raina (Guj) bt Sharon Paul (TN) 6-2, 6-1. U-14: Ankita Raina (Guj) bt Sowjayna B (AP) 6-1, 6-3.
